A Google search on those domains produces a report from security firm RiskIQ, which explains how those domains featured prominently in a series of hacking campaigns against e-commerce websites dating back to March 2016. According to RiskIQ, the attacks targeted online stores running outdated and unpatched versions of shopping cart software from Magento, Powerfront and OpenCart.
On the surface, this all seems like innocent fun in which normal people also participate. However, beneath the veneer of fun and games is a far more troubling scenario: these seemingly legitimate activities award criminally obtained assets as prizes. These range from credit card dumps to personally identifiable information (PII).
Many of these prizes are obtained through malicious means and can be used to facilitate more cybercrime. For example, PII is often used for identity theft, while credit card dumps are used to commit credit card fraud.
Until recently, hackers were focused on stealing credit card data stored in the magnetic stripes of our cards (this data is called a "dump" in fraudster lingo.) Hackers typically did this by getting malware to execute on point-of-sale systems. This malware would read the credit card data stored in the magnetic stripe and send it to the hacker's server. Hackers would then sell these dumps on the dark web to fraudsters, who would in turn clone physical copies of credit cards in order to perpetrate fraud in physical stores. The key point to remember is that clones made from dumps did not have your CVV2 data, and could only be used in physical stores, not online.
The advent of chip-based technology in cards forced fraudsters to change their methods. Today, over 60% of point-of-sale systems in the US support chip based cards and chip technology has also made it much harder to clone cards. In other words, "dumps" are no longer as useful.
Instead, fraudsters started demanding credit card data that can be used to make online purchases. This data, in contrast to a dump, is called "CVV" in fraudster lingo. CVV includes cardholder name, address, credit card number, expiration and the CVV2 (3 digits on the back of the card). The increasing demand for CVVs from fraudsters led to a corresponding increase in the price for CVVs in the dark web.
2018 was the first year in which we saw the impact of this shift. In 2018, we saw a significant push by hacker groups like Magecart to skim online credit card data from websites, and there signs that the threat from groups like Magecart is only growing. Hackers attacked websites through multiple angles - sometimes hacking into a website directly, sometimes via "supply chain attacks" (e.g., Shopper Approved).
"Want drive fast cars?" asks an advertisement, in broken English, atop the Web site iaaca.com. "Want live in premium hotels? Want own beautiful girls? It's possible with dumps from Zo0mer." A "dump,"in the blunt vernacular of a relentlessly flourishing online blackmarket, is a credit card number. And what Zo0mer is peddling is stolenaccount information - name, billing address, phone - for Gold Visacards and MasterCards at $100 apiece.
For despite years of security improvements and tougher, morecoordinated law enforcement efforts, the information that criminalssiphon - credit card and bank account numbers, and whole buckets of rawconsumer information - is boldly hawked on the Internet. The data'svalue arises from its ready conversion into online purchases,counterfeit card manufacture, or more elaborate identity-theft schemes.
The online trade in credit card and bank account numbers, as well asother raw consumer information, is highly structured. There are buyersand sellers, intermediaries and even service industries. The playerscome from all over the world, but most of the Web sites where they meetare run from computer servers in the former Soviet Union, making themdifficult to police.
Lengthy tutorials posted at online "carding" forums indicate thatthe cob art form is highly developed. A patient criminal will waituntil the day a victim receives a billing statement. "That way you havea full 30 days" before the victim is likely to look over his accountagain, explained one frank tutorial collected by the F.B.I.
A user by the nickname Sirota is peddling account information sodetailed, and so formatted, that it clearly came from a credit report.He is asking $200 per dump on accounts with available balances above$10,000, with a minimum order of five if the buyer wants accountsassociated with a particular bank. "Also, I can provide dumps withonline access," he wrote. "The price of such dumps is 5% of availablecredit."
At iaaca.com, for example, those wishing to sell cobs or cobservices "will be required to provide ten (10) change of addresses, tobe distributed to two reviewers," who "will test this service by eitherphone or Internet." New vendors of credit card numbers "will berequired to furnish 20 VALID dumps (5 Classics, 5 business, 5platinums, 5 corporate; 50 percent Visa, 50 percent MasterCard),"according to the site administrators.
